Proverbs 4:10 (NKJV) — 10 Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And the years of your life will be many.

Like the fifth commandment, the admonition to hear one’s father and to receive his sayings is accompanied by the promise of long life.

Exodus 20:12 (NKJV) — 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

Ephesians 6:1–3 (NKJV) — 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”

The Law of Moses promised long life as a reward for honoring one’s parents, and Solomon wrote during the era of the Law. Even though Christians are not under the Law of Moses as a rule of life, obedience to parental authority may result in long life because to obey one’s parents may tend to spare a person from many foolish and disastrous mistakes, both natural and spiritual, that take lives and shorten life-spans.

Romans 6:14 (NKJV) — 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

Romans 7:4 (NKJV) — 4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

Romans 7:6 (NKJV) — 6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

Romans 10:4 (NKJV) — 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Galatians 3:10–13 (NKJV) — 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” 11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.” 12 Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),

Galatians 5:1–4 (NKJV) — 1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. 2 Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. 3 And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. 4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

Hebrews 8:6–7 (NKJV) — 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.

Hebrews 10:9 (NKJV) — 9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second.
